School Notes

  • In our program, young children ages 2 - 5 develop all the early childhood development skills such as fine and gross motor skill development, social-emotional skills, literacy, and cognitive development in a traditional program - but they learn them in two languages! Children develop in English and either Mandarin Chinese or Spanish. Studies show that children who develop bilingual skills early become better students and have better focus and understanding of other cultures. Our elementary program builds on the strong foundation of our preschool. Students learn all the core subjects in two languages. This program is well suited for academically strong elementary students without previous language exposure with most students able to become bilingual in their first year! Elementary students benefit from small class sizes and flexible grouping to accelerate learning. Students outperform independent school norms on the ERB assessed in English while achieving high bilingual proficiency. Ninety percent of graduates are accepted to their first choice independent school. Starting in the year 2020, a new Accelerated Language Track was instituted, enabling students without prior Mandarin to join in Grade 6 and continue to Grade 8, enabling them to accelerate language development in high school. Students Grade 7-8 take part in a two-week trip during spring break to a Chinese-speaking country to engage in service learning. Students have the option of learning a 3rd language, Spanish, during these years. The goal is the attainment of advanced levels of Mandarin and progress toward the global seal of biliteracy. Door-to-door transportation and financial aid options are available. To learn more, visit www.hwis.org Come and visit us via an in-person tour and info session: www.hwis.org/events.

We LOVE this school! One of the standout features of HudsonWay Immersion School is undoubtedly the language immersion program. Witnessing our daughter effortlessly switch between languages is a testament to the school's immersive and effective language education. The commitment of the teachers to create a bilingual environment has greatly enriched her linguistic abilities, and we are thrilled to see her confidence and proficiency grow in both languages. Beyond the language aspect, the academic journey at HudsonWay has been nothing short of exceptional. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed, striking a perfect balance between challenging and engaging. Our daughter's intellectual curiosity has been nurtured, and she has developed a genuine love for learning. The teachers are not only knowledgeable but also passionate about fostering a positive learning environment, which has undoubtedly contributed to her academic success.

Why This Grandmom Knows Hudson Way Immersion School is the Best OptionFamilies who live in Manhattan, have a unique advantage over any other city in the United States. The numbers of languages spoken on the playgrounds of Central Park alone are too numerous to count. To not expose your child to another language at an early age in this city would be a missed opportunity time you could never reclaim. But where should you send your child for the best education? Hudson Way Immersion School offers Spanish, Mandarin, and English, all of which are in the top five list of the most spoken languages around the world. Here`s what I know a bi-lingual education will give my granddaughter: She will have stronger cognitive abilities than mono-lingual students will allow her to easily perform better on academic tests will have more exciting job opportunities world view will be even broaderHer travel experiences will be more enriching benefits will last long into her old age granddaughter`s experience in pre-K 2 at Hudson Way so far has been wonderful. She happily goes to school every day and hears only Spanish stories, songs, and conversation while she does active and creative play, guided by loving teachers. Her classes are small and diverse. The curriculum is age-appropriate and fun. My daughter and son-in-law have already made friends with other parents who they join socially for dinner, pumpkin picking, and playground time. The choice couldn`t be easier! Beth Logue Pierce`s Grandmom.

I cannot say enough great things about my experience at Hudson Way. We have children in both the Chinese and Spanish programs. My 4-year-old is new to HWIS and entered the Spanish program. From the first day, he has been excited about learning and came home speaking Spanish! He loves his teachers who have fostered his independence and love of reading. His teachers are approachable, attentive, and invested in the children. During drop-off, he easily leaves us and runs to his teachers ready to start his day. When he asks for words in English he also asks to learn them in Spanish. I am just thrilled with his progress.

We transitioned our twins from a Mandarin preschool and wanted them maintain the language those we are not native speakers. Hudson Way was totally the right choice. They language has flourish along with their English. I love the engaging nature of the curriculum. The environment is very inclusive and seeing all cultures being celebrated has definitely helped this be both an educational but also nurturing.
