School Notes

Vanguard Preparatory School was founded to address the needs of students experiencing academic, social, and emotional difficulties.

Philosophy
At Vanguard, we recognize that all students have unique potential and can achieve when given relevant learning tasks in an atmosphere where appropriate behaviors are practiced daily.

Therapeutic Approach
The cornerstone of Vanguard `s therapeutic program is our emphasis on the research-based method of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). We recognize that for many of our students, social skills and self-regulation are concepts that must be taught. While students may be book smart, they will not be successful in life without these relational skills. With the support of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), we provide every student with practical social-emotional competence assessments to benchmark not only their academic progress but social and emotional as well.

Our goal is to provide each student with the support to be a happy, productive and successful person. We accomplish this through a holistic and therapeutic educational approach with the following focus:
  • Actively teaching social skills necessary for productive relationships
  • Providing regular group therapy
  • Developing coping skills
  • Teaching problem solving
  • Setting consistent limits
  • Clearly communicating expectations clearly
  • Rewarding conscientious hard work and effort
  • Building character, personal responsibility, and accountability
  • Teaching conflict resolution
  • Encouraging self-discipline and responsibility for personal growth
  • Valuing attitude over aptitude
Beliefs
Vanguard's approach to education is inspired by several foundational beliefs:
  • We believe that social-emotional learning sets the stage for academic learning and success in other areas.
  • We believe that children who are intellectually engaged in learning are closer to developing behavior that will positively affect their future path.
  • We believe that what children learn in school should be reinforced at home, which is why Vanguard provides diverse educational opportunities for parents.
  • And finally, we believe in the power of difference. Vanguard is a place where very different students learn to accept and help one another, developing a mindset that will benefit them throughout their lives.

I can't say enough positive things about Vanguard!! It was a game changer for our son with ADHD. Public school was completely failing him, academically, socially and emotionally. He was miserable and fought about going to school every day. Vanguard fills the gaps that we were left with in public school. We finally found a place where our son feels like he belongs and he is doing so good now! The teachers and the counselors at Vanguard really care about the students and their progress. The therapeutic environment is absolutely amazing for kids that need it. For the first time in our son's life, he actually likes going to school! Way to go Vanguard staff for the amazing job you do everyday!
