School Notes

  • A leader in bilingual education, The French American Academy offers students a private education in both French and English.
  • The positive, nurturing, and creative learning environment blends traditional and progressive approaches with newer teaching techniques in order to promote greater cognitive and social growth, multi-cultural understanding, individual confidence and self-expression. An early and continuing bilingual education has been proven to strengthen a child`s fundamental ability to listen, reason, focus, multi-task, and communicate better. It also helps children perform better in non-language courses, like Math and Science. Finally, it promotes cultural fluency which helps children adapt more easily in today's global community.
  • The French American Academy serves students from Pre-K through 5th grade. The Academy also hosts after school activities in French, enrichment classes, summer programs for children and language classes for adults. The French American Academy has TWO campus locations: New Milford and Jersey City, New Jersey. http://www.faacademy.org

We sent two children to FAA from prek2 until 4th grade. It was an excellent experience for our children and for the parents. Highly recommend it especially for the early years. We are not ex-pats, so it was really just the bi-lingual education and private school atmosphere that was attractive.

I enrolled my son in FAA when he was 2 (PK-2). I can't be happier with the school so far, teachers are amazing and well prepared, the environment is exceptional and the bilingual academic curriculum is such an amazing program! It is the best investment for my son's future in a competitive international world. They also have after-school activities and lots of events fun for both parents and kids! (Bingo night, movie night, fall festival...). We just love it!

Our two boys have attended the French American Academy since they were two years old, they are now 8 and 9. It is a small, diverse, intensely international community, with wonderful teachers. Having grown up in Switzerland, I wanted my boys to experience different cultural backgrounds and languages, while getting fluent in French. What is also very important to me is the level of environmental awareness and teaching going on at the school? The children all bring their own reusable from home and compost their food scraps. They are taught art, music, all team sports as well as fundamental sport disciplines, and there is an array of after-school programs, as well as homework help. It is a small school, with a high teacher to student ratio, and lower and higher grades frequently interact and collaborate on projects, teaching the older students empathy and creating a strong family-like environment. At least three times a year a school show is prepared, and the end-of-year shows have been of such high quality that the children are immensely proud of their input. The parents are also a tight community, and they collaborate on fun yearly events, such as International Potluck day, Fete des Rois, the French book fair, the children's art exhibit. I can't think of a better place for my boys to grow up and highly recommend this gem of a school.

Small class size and very attentive teachers. The school operates like a small community. The school is sensitive and very responsive to child allergies and that is very important to me. My son started the school at age 2 already fully understanding French, however, he did not speak it back. Being fully immersed in this environment has gotten him to a place where he is comfortable speaking the language and at 3 he is actually speaking both English and French, knows who to speak which language to and can even translate for me (non-French speaker). The school also keeps up with technology, there's an app where the teachers post often and there's a communication weekly letting us parents know what the focus is for the week. I'm very pleased with the school. Also, the leadership at the school is great! The principal is very involved and even stands outside in the mornings greeting parents and students as they arrive.

My son has been in the school for three years now and is amazing to see how he has improved. He went from barely speaking to being fluent in French, English and Spanish. He made great friendships and is genuinely a happy child. I love the friendly and professional staff, the school administrators support and the great environment the school have created for these children. I have no doubt that the decision to enroll him at the FAA now will positively impact my son's future.

Both my kids are at FAA New Milford, none speak or spoke French (both speak Russian only), both kids love the school and their teachers, never heard them tell me that they don't want to go. It is amazing to see them start speaking french within a first year! I also like kids and parents in the class. School is starting to focus more on math this year vs., prior year, which I totally support. I like that classes are small and the school price is manageable.

Great bilingual school, lots of diversity of cultures, great teachers dedicated to their students. My daughter loves her school and makes such progress in French, English, being kind to the other, collaborating, doing her part for the environment.

We enrolled both our kids at FAA this year and the experience has been amazing. Our daughter who started in a different bilingual program in pre K4 moved to kindergarten at FAA and she has been thriving ever since. Our son started in pre K3 and he is picking up French faster than what we expected. We are very happy with the environment in this school, the quality and care of the teachers and the great community that we feel privileged to be a part of.

This is a follow up to my earlier review about 4 years ago. My then 1st grader is now a 5th grader at the FAA New Milford and we are very happy with our experiences over the years. We highly recommend the FAA to all new parents looking for a nurturing, creative, multicultural environment as well as a high quality bilingual education.

Excellent school! Our children aged 6 and 9 have been attending school recently, and we are delighted how the educational community takes care of them. The community of this school is extremely benevolent and helps us, as new expats, to feel at home!!!

My 2-year-old son has been enrolled at The French American Academy of New Milford for the past 3 months and I have seen a great improvement in his social, physical, language and cognitive development. Most importantly, the FAA community is rich in culture and diversity, which I believe will help the children in their future integration to the outside world. The FAA staff is friendly and available for any questions. We feel very lucky and grateful to have the opportunity to be part of the FAA family. Thank you!

The French American Academy (FAA) has been a wonderful school for my two children. We were Americans returning to the US after a few years abroad. The school has provided a wonderful combination of continued French language development (we do not speak French at home), academic rigor in all the subjects (reading, math, science) and a nurturing individualized culture. The parents are delightful and send their children to the school for similar reasons (culture and academics). If there is ever a question, Anne-Sophie is always available. I recommend the school highly.

We enrolled our daughter in Pre-K2 last year with the expectation of exposing her to the French language (neither my husband nor I are French) but she has gained so much more than just language acquisition. We have been very impressed by the school as a whole. Our daughter's teacher, Isabelle, is beyond amazing and the perfect transition from the home to a school environment. The school's administrators make an outstanding effort to keep the parents informed and involved. Our daughter's classroom has a private blog where her teacher posts regular updates including what is being taught, links to songs the kids are learning (so we can play them at home too) and pictures of our little one in action that are truly worth a thousand words. Especially as working parents, having this awareness of what is happening in the classroom and the activities that our daughter is involved in has proven to be invaluable and reassuring. One of the things that has impressed us the most about the school is their approach to education. Even at an early age, we see that our daughter's curriculum is not based on memorization but that there is a real-life approach to learning while making it fun. We love to see that to learn about vegetables, the classroom cooked a real vegetable soup! And to learn about spring, gardening and plants, the kids got to plant and water real trees and flowers and even touch real worms! And it is not only about learning but also about shaping kids into responsible adults like with the school's recycling campaign all-year round. Even though our daughter is young, we are thrilled with her development and the words and sentences that she is starting to put together in French. She loves going to school, her teachers, classmates and feels safe in the school environment. When we get a chance to visit the school and see the older students, we are impressed to see their proficiency in both English and French, which I believe speaks highly of the school's curriculum and its commitment to bilingual education. The administration (Anne-Sophie and her team) work hard to create a sense of community and make sure that parents have an opportunity to be involved. We receive regular email updates with important information on school campaigns/activities, the school monthly calendar and there are many student/family activities throughout the year. Our daughter has had 2 (age-appropriate) concerts, a pumpkin picking field trip and many other activities and holiday celebrations to introduce and reinforce the French culture. To help strengthen the sense of community, the school and the PTO provide many opportunities for activities also outside of the classroom. We highly recommend the French American Academy as an institution to see your kids learn and flourish.

My 3 children have all been a part of the French American Academy of New Milford since the beginning. My two older children (ages 14 & 11) attended the after-school program and learned a tremendous amount. My youngest (age 6) is a full time student who began in Pre-K 2 and is currently in 1st grade. Not only is she completely fluent in French, but she is learning about the French culture on a daily basis. American traditions are also recognized as the school is truly bilingual. I really like the hands on approach to learning, the bilingual academics, the high level of art education, the variety of athletics the children are exposed to, and the lunch program is cool too! My daughter is willing to try new things and is open minded about food in great extent to the school's varied & healthy menu. The teachers and staff are great and they give a lot of personal attention to everyone. Last but not least, the international community of parents & children is a big plus too. We will be back next year!

This is a no-brainer. I enrolled my daughter in kindergarden and by first grade she was fully fluent in French. She is now in third grade and people from France say her accent is perfect. Aside from all the studies that show that bi-lingual children's minds are more flexible, with the international perspective at FAA my daughter is cosmopolitain and views the world as her home. I can't say enough positive things about the French American Academy. I love it. FAA is amazing and I am so happy and proud that my daughter speaks French and English. She is now asking me to teach her more languages.
