School Notes
- Wesley Prep's mission is to develop joyful leaders empowered by academics and integrity. We are committed to prioritizing the education of the whole child: the social, emotional, spiritual, and academic growth of each of the children we serve. Our curriculum is both developmentally appropriate and challenging and builds from one grade to the next.
- We have intentionally embedded signature learning moments at each level so that our students have opportunities to highlight and celebrate what they are learning. With a strong focus on both academics and character, we nurture and develop confident, capable leaders who are curious, collaborative, and creative problem solvers willing to take risks.
- Although our teachers use standards like the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and national standards in particular content areas to guide what students should learn at each level, each teacher goes further and deeper, thus creating a crucial need for communication and review across ages and disciplines.
- Wesley Prep faculty and staff honor the dignity of childhood and believe that experiential learning is critical to engaging student curiosity, which leads to the development of life-long learners. Through rich and purposefully designed learning experiences at all grade levels, our students develop the skills and capacities needed to successfully navigate the world in which they live.
- Our Nursery and Toddlers program is an introduction to school for our littlest learners. Teachers use knowledge of child development, experience and understanding of the power of play to design a school day experience that both nurtures and grows our students. Each class attends Early Childhood Music and Movement class daily in support of language and cognitive development. Students also practice their gross motor skills through time in the playroom and on the playground. Teachers plan lessons, games and read alouds to guide students through their next developmental stage and meet students where they are on the learning continuum.
- Our preschool program is play-based and utilizes a variety of methods to engage our students in the act of learning by doing. Manipulatives and hands-on activities are used by our teaching teams to bring relevance to the topics and units being taught in our preschool classrooms and to engage the children in meaningful and intentional ways, so the subject matter is known and experienced, rather than simply memorized. Circle time is a daily activity to introduce and teach concepts and skills, and teacher-designed centers can include science, art, math, blocks, and more. Formal curriculum is used in our PreK 3 and PreK 4 programs to introduce and reinforce foundational concepts in mathematics, pre-literacy, vocabulary, and handwriting instruction.
- Our educational philosophy continues into the elementary program with engaging and interactive approaches to teaching and learning. Instruction is delivered in a variety of ways, including hands-on, experiential, and project-based learning; cross-curricular projects; community outreach; and a variety of opportunities for our students to present and perform in front of an audience. To create such meaningful moments of learning, we must provide the bedrock of a solid curriculum. Formal curricular programs such as Everyday Math, Savvas myView, and Science Fusion create a foundational structure, and teachers research and innovate to complement their curricula, making learning robust, engaging, and authentic. Teachers collaborate across grade levels to ensure vertical alignment and appropriate building in content, skills, expectations, and independence.
- Wesley Prep places great importance on enrichment outside of the core strands. Beginning at the nursery level, students attend music class. Chapel, physical education, and library are introduced in Preschool, and PreK 4 students attend art and have regular visits from the school counselor for social-emotional guidance lessons. Elementary students attend additional enrichment classes, adding music, drama/theatre, technology, Spanish, and science lab. Fifth and sixth graders attend human spirituality and test preparation courses. All School - students participate in these enrichment classes for the entirety of the academic year, so that students are participating in all enrichment subjects throughout the entire school year. This exposure promotes well-rounded students with a wide range of interests and experiences. There is also an emphasis on the importance of outdoor play, with outdoor recess held twice daily for Preschool and Kindergarten and at least once daily for Elementary students.
