School Notes
- Montessori East's program is dramatically different than traditional systems of education. Each childlearns at his own pace under the careful guidance of a trained Montessori teacher who consistently tracksprogress andhelps him build on his own personal best in each subject. The child is encouragedto expand his current understanding and skills rather thanto compete/compare against others to determine his level of success. This enablesmanychildren to far exceed traditional state standards and produces an atmosphere ofcooperation, peace, confidenceand personal excellence.Mentoring other children, and being mentored by them,is also key to the successofour students. The Montessori method of education flowsnaturally with child development. Children are allowed to learn alone or in small groups and are encouraged to help one another according to their own personal skills and strengths. They are also encouraged to ask for help from other children. This empowerment of theirpeers andof themselves creates a lasting confidence andacertainty ofcompetence that would be impossible for an adult to impart.Of all the gifts of Montessori, self-trust and proactive empowermentmay be the greatest, as it is life-long when it is established in a child at an early age.Other important aspects ofMontessori East's program include freedom of choice in activity and timing, the freedom to move around the classroom as opposed to being confined to a desk or table, peacefulproblem-solving,social skills, a sense of belonging in a community, responsibility and a life-long love of learning.
