McLean School

We understand students first for what they can do, not for what they cannot.
Serving kindergarten through grade twelve, McLean School's comprehensive college preparatory curriculum is traditional without being rigid, challenging without being intimidating, and designed with the real world in mind. Our Abilities Model enables bright students, including those with dyslexia, anxiety, ADHD, or organizational challenges, to be successful in and out of the classroom.
For over 70 years we have helped students realize their full potential.
We recognize each child for their strengths, provide embedded classroom support in areas of need, and foster resiliency. Whether it's on the playing field, or the theater stage, in the robotics lab or art studio, we offer a full-scope program of opportunities for students.  At McLean, we believe in our students.

We are in We are in our third year at McLean School. Our son has ADHD and dyslexia and fell significantly behind in reading at another independent school it was beginning to impact his self-esteem and leading to some behavioral issues. McLean has made significant progress in helping him to read independently and boost his confidence. The small class sizes are great but the grade is not so small as to limit his friend circle. The parent community is really active with social, educational, and service events. The other parents are also very supportive. The administration is very accessible. There is always senior leadership including the head of the school and divisions at school events and they are open to ideas and comments whenever we have interacted with them.

I have two daughters. Rachel started McLean in 3rd grade and graduated in 2018. She is currently thriving in college due to the education she received! She went to college with study, self-advocacy and organizational skills that have allowed her to be very successful in a large public university. Molly began McLean in 5th grade and is a current senior. I am confident that she is also well prepared for college. I also cannot say enough about the college counseling department. Due to there knowledge and one-on-one attention we did not have to hire an outside service to get through this process.

I highly recommend this school to a parent that is looking for a K-12 school who embraces your child for who they are, celebrates their talents, supports their challenges and invests in positive outcomes for every student. This dynamic, empathetic community puts the students at the heart of every decision and every aspect of school culture. McLean teachers truly care about the social-emotional well-being of the students, not just the academics (although the academics are strong). The relationships they build with the students are authentic and last through the students` tenure at the school you can see it in the hallways and at school events. The faculty helps foster learning by creating a nurturing and supportive classroom community that enables students to take risks in their learning, make mistakes, voice their opinions, share their perspectives and learn how to self-advocate. Simply put, they make kids feel good about themselves and recognize the greatness they have within.

Both of our girls attend the McLean School. Our youngest attends the Middle School and is a traditional learner. Our oldest attends the Upper School and has mild to moderate learning challenges. We love McLean's small class sizes. The girls are supported academically and socially by experienced and qualified teachers, specialist and administrators. Most importantly, McLean has a supportive and friendly environment that fosters physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth. It is a place where our children are happy, thriving and can live up to their full potential. The girls often say that "It feels like I have been here my whole life." We have heard Mr. Saxenian say that McLean is transformative. In fact, it has been transformative and life-changing for our family.

I have 2 children at McLean and they are both finishing up their third year. The teachers and staff at McLean are truly amazing and have transformed the lives of my children and our family. When my children came to McLean, they lacked confidence, doubted their intelligence and were a shell of who they are now. My daughter has discovered a passion for singing and science, and my son has become a master at math, and wholly dedicated to the award-winning school robotics team! Both of my children are thriving in the progressive and individualized culture of McLean school. We are lucky to have found it when we did!

My daughter bounded out of the car the first day I dropped her off at McLean School, eager for all that awaited her. Three years later, she still beams with excitement as she enters the school each and every day. The teachers are dedicated, the instruction is individualized, and the atmosphere is positively transformative. We couldn't be happier!
