School Notes
Maryel School is a top private international and
bilingualschool that opened its doors in Murray Hill,
Manhattan in 2013 as a co-educational day school that combines the
education system of the United States with the education system of
Spain.
Maryel was originally founded in Seville, Spain in 2004 as Mariela Bilingual by Celine Cacho, a visionary in education, along with other parents, and the invaluable help of child psychologist, Jos Lus C. Mauricio. Her vision wasbased on these principles:
1. Dual Language Education
Maryel Dual Language is a form of education that provides content instruction and literacy to all students through two languages, English and Spanish.
Maryel`s teachers observe their students from eight new perspectives. In recent years, new definitions have gained acceptance regarding the concept of "intelligence" which has dramatically enhanced the appraisal of human competencies.
With this inclusive practice, the skills, abilities, gifts, and different intelligences of each student are taken care of and strengthened. All students can be apprentices of success. There are no limits to what one can learn at a certain age.

Maryel was originally founded in Seville, Spain in 2004 as Mariela Bilingual by Celine Cacho, a visionary in education, along with other parents, and the invaluable help of child psychologist, Jos Lus C. Mauricio. Her vision wasbased on these principles:
- Each child has a unique gift and talent which they express in a special way.
- As educators, we must help students discover their unique talent, help them feel confident enough to explore it, and provide the necessary resources to ensure each student has the ability to develop it to its maximum potential.
- Bilingualism is an essential part of children`s education in the 21stcentury. When children are exposed to two different languages, they learn to be more tolerant and respectful of other cultures and traditions, which enables them to become more responsible and active citizens of the world.
1. Dual Language Education
Maryel Dual Language is a form of education that provides content instruction and literacy to all students through two languages, English and Spanish.
- Our Model:
- The Spanish language is used all day in the primary grades (Preschool), while English and Spanish are used equally in the later grades (Kindergarten-Fifth Grade).
- Both literacy and content are taught in Spanish and in English over the course of the program.
- Instruction is delivered in one language at a time without translation. Maryel teachers maintain the separation of languages for instruction (no translation). Skills taught in each language are coordinated to maximize cross-linguistic transfer and support learning in content areas.
- Results:
- Maryel students have greater cognitive flexibility, advanced problem-solving skills, higher-order abstract thinking abilities, and increased creativity.
- They also show advanced abilities to connect meaning between languages and cognitively make "more room" in the brain for new information.
- Children who study in two languages consistently outscore monolingual students on standardized tests.
- Maryel students have greater success in an educational setting and have the added benefit of greater ease in learning a third language.
2. Multiple Intelligence
Approach
Maryel`s teachers observe their students from eight new perspectives. In recent years, new definitions have gained acceptance regarding the concept of "intelligence" which has dramatically enhanced the appraisal of human competencies.
- Verbal/linguistic intelligence
- Logical/mathematicalintelligence
- Spatial Intelligence
- Musical Intelligence
- Kinesthetic Intelligence
- Interpersonal Intelligence
- Intrapersonal Intelligence
- Naturalistic Intelligence
With this inclusive practice, the skills, abilities, gifts, and different intelligences of each student are taken care of and strengthened. All students can be apprentices of success. There are no limits to what one can learn at a certain age.

Our daughter started at Maryel in the 2s program and is now in Pre-K. Her experience has been wonderful. I truly believe the teachers are among the best in the city. We don't speak Spanish at home, but our daughter is now truly fluent thanks to Maryel. We love that they have given her the gift of being bilingual. The community is small and caring, and we've loved getting to know the other students and their parents through playdates. We have also been incredibly grateful for how the Maryel administration has handled our daughter's education in the age of Covid. After the initial closure in March 2020, they were able to reopen their doors in September 2020 for full-time, in-person learning. And the school has been open since then without a single shut-down. Maryel has kept our child safe, happy, and eager to learn. We are incredibly grateful to the administration and the teachers.

As the mom of two bi-cultural children, it was of the utmost importance for me that my children learned not only my language but also my culture. I am so lucky to have found both at Maryel! My son is in first grade and is completely fluent in both English and Spanish. He is learning to read and write in both languages, doing math in both languages, and learning every subject in both languages. This approach enhances their little brains because they are learning to process all types of knowledge in both languages and through the lens of both cultures. We are extremely lucky to be at Maryel, and can't say enough great things! Any child, whether they are bi-cultural or not, would greatly benefit from Maryel's academic standards, culture, and overall experience.

We have been part of the Maryel community for 5 years, with three children attending. This school is the best! The academics are incredible while balancing fun and arts and teaching Spanish. We are so grateful to have found this school. Our only regret is that we didn't find it in time for our eldest child to attend.

We have been at Maryel for 5 years now and we absolutely love the school. Our three children are thriving. The academics are top-notch! The language immersion program is very effective and all three are bilingual. Most importantly Maryel is a second home for them. My kids are so happy to go to school every day and have developed a deep love for school and learning. The community of parents at Maryel is also a wonderful asset. We cannot say enough things about our school! We are so lucky and very grateful to be a part of the Marvel family.

We have twins at Maryel and are very pleased with the small class sizes, bilingual curriculum, and the care exhibited by the teachers and staff when it comes to our kid's education.

For the past 2 years, we have been a part of the Marvel community and it has been a fantastic experience, despite the inherent challenges. All the staff and parents have gone above and beyond to make the school safe for the children. Our son comes home with new vocabulary every day and he enjoys the fun learning setting within small class sizes. My husband and I are not Spanish speakings but the opportunity for our son to develop the Spanish language at an early stage in a fantastic school with friendly teachers made Maryel a really East decision for us. I could not be more excited for my daughter to be old enough to join the 2s program in January.

We spent a lot of time looking for the right fit when it came to choosing our son's first school. It was important to us that the school had friendly teachers and a tight-knit community that would support him and us as new parents, and Maryel completely exceeded our expectations. The low student-to-teacher ratio allowed us to really get to know our son's teacher as well as many of the other parents in his class. And we have kept those friendships to this day! We also noticed how easily he started picking up Spanish from as young as two years old. My husband and I are not Spanish-speakers, but the bilingual aspect of Maryel really drew us in, especially because the two's program was so immersive. Our son always came home excited to teach us new Spanish words! I'm so grateful for the community we have found here.
