CORE Community School Photo #3 - The CORE framework guides all of our teaching and learning at CORE Community School: Consciousness ... Ownership ... Reflection ... Expression. At the heart of our CORE beliefs about teaching and learning is the belief that all kids can learn. Through our years of experience, we have seen, again and again, the power and importance of providing the right environment.
CORE Community School Photo #4 - Learning is about making connections. Our curriculum is designed to help kids make connections between subjects, ideas and previous knowledge. These connections lead to deeper understanding of big ideas. Our curriculum is a combination of conceptual understanding of these big ideas and fundamental skill work.
CORE Community School Photo #5 - We understand and respect that people learn best in different ways. We help our students to better understand their own learning, specifically identifying their strengths and using these to improve in their areas of difficulty. We also help students to discover and gain independence with learning strategies that help them in different areas.
CORE Community School Photo #6 - We love field trip hikes at CORE Community School!
CORE Community School Photo #7 - We believe it is just as important for kids to spend time reflecting on who they are as it is to grow academically. Our students engage in consistent self-reflection throughout the school day, thinking about who they are and who they want to be. We guide our students to set both short and long-term goals.
CORE Community School Photo #8 - One of our favorite education authors, Parker Palmer, says, "We teach who we are." We share this belief and feel that it simply explains why we love the work we do-it is a natural extension of who we are.
CORE Community School Photo #9 - Learning is a human process that cannot be separated from emotion. We understand that when a child struggles with some aspect of learning, it inevitably impacts their emotions and behaviors.
CORE Community School Photo #10 - We also understand that as a child`s emotional wellbeing improves, so does their capacity to learn. For this reason, we do not define kids by their diagnoses, labels or previous school experiences.
CORE Community School serves students in grades 5-12 who have some factor/factors interfering with their success.
We help our students to "know their own strength" by nurturing and developing our students` academic, outdoor, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness; by providing a safe, supportive learning environment; developing perspective and compassion in our students through opportunities to genuinely connect with and give back to the community; helping students better understand and manage their own learning profile; guiding students to discover their identity, passions and purpose; and empowering parents to be effective, accountable learning partners in their child`s life.

School Notes

  • CORE Community School, in the city limits of Woodstock, Georgia as well as our new farm retreat property, CORE Community Farm @ Lakeview, seven miles away from the school building, serves students in grades 5-12 who have some factor or factors interfering with their success.
  • At CORE Community School, we involve our students in traditional academics, social time, and recreational time Monday through Thursday. We have always spent Fridays performing community service work at other nonprofit organizations around Cherokee County and the general north Atlanta area. Now, with the ownership of the farm property, the staff and students gather at the farm every Friday afternoon after returning from our morning community service visits.
  • We offer all the traditional academic subjects, as well as a rich offering of electives and outdoor extracurricular activities and community service opportunities for all of our students. We also field teams in basketball, cross country, volleyball, and track and field, competing against other Atlanta area schools.
  • CORE is an especially "safe place" for students who have been overwhelmed in so many ways by the natural action of growing up, by daily life, by family dynamics, and by other school environments - as well as by their social and emotional issues and diagnosed disorders.

The CORE is a fantastic school that strives for all students to succeed! They have an emphasis on community engagement and physical activity such as martial arts, hiking, skateboarding, yoga, theatre, etc...that allows kids to be kids. I do not think that my son could achieve the challenges of high school academics without it! Students are allowed to be themselves without peer pressure or excessive rules that often cause undue struggles. The teachers and principals (Annie and Dymond) are top-notch! I highly recommend CORE for ANY student who wants to enjoy life and succeed in school! The culture is positive and each child is treated with encouragement and long-term support goals.

Core Community School gets it. Not all kids can function, much less thrive, in your typical public school setting. My ADHD, the autistic child was beginning to fall apart in the public schools, despite their accommodations. They began to see themselves as stupid and defective when in reality they are incredibly bright. We moved them to Core last spring and the difference in them is amazing. They love learning again, they are more confident in themself, and they feel at home in the welcoming atmosphere of Core. Core gives kids plenty of opportunities to move during the day and challenge kids to learn beyond just memorization and regurgitation. School counselors are always available if your student needs to talk or needs room to decompress in. I have heard other parents say that Core does not offer enough academic rigor. If your expectation is for your child to take Honors or AP classes, then Core is not currently the place for you. My child was suffocating under "academic rigor" in public school. They were definitely smart enough for it, but the executive function skills required to do well in an Honors or AP class just weren't there. They DO have those skills now, because Core works with students every single day on executive function, teaching them how to study, how to stay organized, how to break their work down into small bites. As I said, Core gets it. My child is currently in 10th grade at Core, and our expectation is that they will graduate from there and continue to college. If you don't think your child is bound for college, Core gets that too. They work with students to show them opportunities outside of the college track, taking them to businesses to learn about them, giving them opportunities to volunteer so they can understand what it is to be a part of the community at large. I feel like Core really sees the whole person and works to give that person the tools they need to thrive in life, knowing it will look different for each person. I can't recommend Core enough.

Core has been the best thing that has happened for my son and our entire family. Finally, people understand my son and really care about him. The one-on-one help and small class sizes is wonderful. He now loves going to school every day. Core has academics at all levels and is individualized at each student's level, which is awesome. They even have sports, lots of outside time, music, arts, fun learning days at the farm, and volunteering in community services. They even have wonderful counselors and they are right at the school. Annie and Dymond, the owners and head of the school, are the best. They are so easy to talk to, and very understanding of each student's needs. This is the first school that doesn't call me all the time to tell me what negative things my child has done. They handle it. They really care about their students. Core even helps students after they graduate with going to college, going to a trade school, or getting a job. The core is our family and we absolutely love it.

Both my sons attend CORE. We have been here for 3 years. We love CORE Community School. There are not enough words and stars. The teachers are amazing, the administration has an incredible vision that keeps getting better. Community service projects, working on the school farm and skating in the school barn. It is a blessing to have our kids in such a supportive and healthy environment that is also working hard to prepare them for life. Send your kids here.

Excellent, caring, and supportive staff (aka Super Crew). My 3 children have had a wonderful experience with all of the teachers over the past several years. They have really shown growth and every teacher they have had has been effective at communicating their strengths and areas to focus on. Core has many extracurricular activities to choose from and a strong focus on community. The staff has always been kind and informative as well as the administration. I feel that my children are being well prepared not only with academics but with life soils as well. If it was not for Core community school I am not sure what we would do.
