Overview
Founded in 1952, Stevenson School is a selective coeducational PK-12 boarding and day school with 750 students.
Our mission includes three aims: to prepare students for success in school and life beyond school, to foster their passion for learning and achievement, and to help them shape a joyful life.
The 520-student upper division, comprising grades 9-12, is located in Pebble Beach, where about 60% of students reside in six faculty-supervised dormitories and 40% are day students.
The lower and middle divisions, totaling about 250 students in grades PK-8, are located in Carmel.
As a California school enlightened by a global sensibility, Stevenson is premised on a vision of education as the means by which we discover the world and contribute to its transformation.
We believe that one's education is best pursued in the company of others, for others' benefit as well as one's own. Our Latin motto-Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re ("Gentle in manner, resolute in deed")-inspires humility and perseverance.
Stevenson offers a values-driven community experience influenced by the distinctive natural beauty, ecological biodiversity, and contemplative culture of California's Central Coast.
On behalf of the entire York community, thank you for your interest in our school.
We are delighted to welcome you to our community, and our website is a great place to start exploring all that York offers.
We are a vibrant community comprised of bright, kind, curious, and driven students as well as a dedicated, supportive faculty and staff.
From inspiring classes, leadership opportunities, and global adventures, to competitive sports, vibrant arts, spirit days, and clubs, York will inspire you to discover more about the world, others, and yourself. We believe that students learn best when they are members of a compassionate, inclusive, and respectful community.
We embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion while we encourage personal responsibility and concern for others.
We encourage our students to explore and collaborate in a joyful atmosphere of mutual respect. We prepare our students to be positive, productive leaders in an exciting future, meeting global challenges with confidence, creativity, and compassion. York attracts students from dozens of middle school, charter school, and homeschool programs throughout Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties and around the world.
To support our well-rounded community, a strong need-based tuition assistance program helps approximately 50% of our students, more than twice the national average for independent schools.
