School Notes
- JDS (www.jds.org) is an Early Childhood through 8th Grade independent day school located in the Crossroads area of Bellevue just two miles south of Microsoft`s main campus. Our multi-age, inquiry-based learning program fosters critical thinking, problem solving, confidence, collaboration, leadership, innovation and more all in a global learning environment. Through inquiry, our students master the same core competencies (content and skills) as their peers in public and other area independent schools, only JDS` inquiry program takes students further, teaching them to think deeper, engage, collaborate and problem solve. Core academics at JDS are enriched with Jewish studies and serve as a foundation for lifelong learning. Ultimately, JDS students know who they are, understand what it means to be part of a community, and are empowered to make a difference in the world by taking action. Our sprawling campus includes a STEAM Innovation Lab, a "Design Lab", green screen and 3-D printer, a state of the art Athletic Center and multiple play and exploratory areas. At JDS, curiosity leads to discovery.

This is the second year that my son has been at JDS and he has grown so much. I appreciate that classes are mixed-ages which gives teachers the flexibility to pair students together with similar levels of understanding in certain topics. There's a wide variety of programs that go above the standard subjects. My 1st grader is starting to learn about STEAM and their robotics program is great to get younger students interested in the sciences early. There are also weekly art, music, and language classes to round out the curriculum. The faculty and staff genuinely care about the kids' engagement with learning and it has made a difference in seeing my son's excitement to go to school every day. I'm very proud of being part of this wonderful school community!

Our son is a student at JDS and his experience has been truly special. The teachers are so loving, patient and understanding. We couldn`t be happier.

We moved our middle schooler to JDS this year, and I just wish we had found JDS sooner. We are a non-Jewish family and have been embraced and engaged since day 1 by the school and the other families. The community and inclusion are so impressive, and something we had failed to find in our prior middle school. The inquiry-based learning approach has her engaged with the learning through reflection and creativity. She comes home and tells us what she is learning and is excited about it! She loves all of the faculty, and I love the fact that they are helping build independence and High School readiness in their middle school program. Would highly recommend their middle school program.

There are not enough words to describe JDS. As a former alumni myself - everything that I loved and remembered about JDS has not changed. The feeling of community, togetherness and a family has only gotten stronger. As a parent - we joined JDS for the 2020 school year with a first grader. The education, preparation from the teachers and school does not go unnoticed. Every topic that goes on in the world is covered - teachers and staff pour their heart and souls into teaching and the best curriculum. As a parent of an elementary school student, I look at middle schoolers in awe during assemblies and presentations. They are so well versed, so educated and so technologically savvy thanks to all their previous years at JDS. With covid - JDS has done an amazing job keeping our kids in school, however when there have been times when school is remote, I got to see the teaching methods first hand. Everything is meticulously organized, each child receives individual attention when need be. The administration staff also does not go unnoticed. Rain or shine, they are greeting families in school drop off lines. What other school staff knows every parent and grandparent by name, their car and who they are picking up?!? Looking forward to JDS only growing and thriving.

We moved from Ohio to WA and from a public magnet school to JDS. We are so pleased. Online learning in the public magnet school was very weak, little face time, no relevant assignments, little time learning from teachers, lots of assignments, etc. My 7th grader was really pulling into himself and playing a lot of video games. When we moved to Seattle, we decided to try a small private school that was managing online learning well. JDS is all that. My son has great teacher support, regular face time with classes, classmates and teachers, enriching and relevant assignments, tailored work to his level, in person learning when safe, and a great community. We could not be happier with our decision. There is rigor but also understanding and relevant discourse. JDS is has been a great middle school.

I am so grateful to JDS for the incredible online education experience for my 4th and 6th graders. Having an 8th grader at a public middle school, the difference is gigantic. With JDS, the kids get a full day of class: teacher instruction, small group work, one-on-one support, opportunities to ask questions and rules of accountability. They also benefit socially from seeing their friends and being able to work and learn together. And it has been this way since day one of lockdown a truly seamless transition. Compared to my older child, who is largely left to his own devices. His education, I regret, may suffer. Whereas at JDS, there are no gaps, no skipping of content, and no compromise of learning. I have always believed in the value of JDS, and in this daily changing environment where adaptability is key, JDS has come through with flying colors! I know I am giving my kids the very best education and experience available!

This is my family`s 10th year at JDS. We have experienced preschool through elementary ed, and now the middle school. I am so grateful we found JDS. My kids are challenged academically, the teachers meet them where they are, and they are so well supported socially and emotionally. I`m convinced my kids are thriving BECAUSE of JDS and that they would doing just okay at a larger public school. The teachers really know the kids and can speak about them as individual learners. They are amazingly supportive with the kids when handling social issues, and it really feels like they have my back as a parent. I know when my family is going through difficult times that the JDS teachers, staff, and parent community is there for us 100% with support and love. I would give up any luxury in my life to keep my kids at this school. It`s the best gift I could ever give them.

We love JDS. Our three kids are enrolled in the school and we've had experience with all its three portions (Early childhood, elementary, middle school). The teachers and staff are phenomenal. They are caring, devoted, and wholeheartedly invested in the academic development of the kids, as well as in their social and emotional well-being. The academic level in science, math, literacy, and general studies is very impressive as school emphasizes inquiry based learning, individual exploration, independent critical thinking, and development of real-world skills throughout all grades, in an age-appropriate manner. All these encourage creativity, curiosity and self-reflection. Building a wide array of academic proficiencies in early grades prepares kids for doing remarkably well in middle school, where they enjoy hands-on experience designing projects that bring together physics, chemistry, math, engineering, presentation skills and team work capabilities at a high level. In JDS, our kids enjoy bilingual experience learning Hebrew from native speaking teachers. JDS is a pluralistic Jewish day school that welcomes all observance levels and makes everyone feel at home. The students/teachers ratio in the school is excellent, promoting a personal touch and meeting individual and unique needs of each and every student. Our kids enjoy a beautiful campus with vast green areas, soccer field, a modern gym, an outdoor amphitheater, and renovated classes. JDS feels like a second home for our kids and for the whole family. It provides a strong sense of community and belonging. As JDS parents, we know our children are happy, safe, seen and heard for who they are, and we enjoy an open channel of communication between us and the JDS administration and staff.

JDS has been an amazing place for my children. We are going on our 7th year as part of the community. The school not only focuses on quality academics but also social and emotional components to a child. The teachers are amazing. They truly care about all the kids and work with each family addressing the different needs of a child. The community at JDS is warm and welcoming and it is a place where everyone is welcome. The quality of academics has really impressed me. My kids are prepared for the next steps in life and not just from an academic point of view but from a well rounded community member point of view. The school is helping to shape creative, caring, smart, and interesting people!

I have three children currently enrolled at the Jewish Day School and I couldn't be happier. I feel the curriculum is challenging and fun and the teachers are more interested in helping my girls grow as people rather than just filling out a grade sheet. The staff is very attentive to each of my daughters individual needs and the communication each week is both personal and informative. My children each have different styles of learning and the faculty takes the time to focus on each one in a way that creates a comprehensive, enriched learning experience. My wife and I love and support this school and can't wait to see my girls grow into confident, enthusiastic, amazing people, with JDS to thank for it.

We have been so pleased with JDS. Great decision for our older child (now in 5th since K) and now proving same for our 2nd in K. The teachers are very special, the sincere atmosphere, the comprehensive curriculum, everything has really been outstanding. We have been over the moon impressed this year specifically with Teacher Randi's connection with the kids and her 5th grade math and writing workshops. Math has been fun and challenging and sneaky - the kids do not realize how much they are learning through the real world games and challenges. The depth of writing skills the kids are experiencing is truly at or above typical HS levels/expectations but at 5th grade comfort. The narrative that came home recently was better after each week's editing and elaboration and could easily rivaled anything written by a sophisticated high school or college student. On top of this, we are seeing our daughter develop as a person and a thinking individual; making decisions and choices based on her own interests and passions not just because her friends are doing it or trying to be "popular." This seems to be an integral part of the JDS education. Our son's (Kindergarten) sudden acceleration of letter recognition and even "snap" words going from 0 to showing signs of starting to read in just a few short months has been astounding. The religious base for both kids has been very satisfying. There is such a simple and straight forward approach to identifying as a Jew that the kids don't realize how much they are growing and internalizing. Both revel in the way they experience the songs they have learned in school sung at camp and vice versa. Rather than sinking back as a wallflower as most kids would do in a large crowd, both kids jump right in with enthusiasm at each holiday and love to sing along with an awe of how fascinating it is that others are singing the same songs they learned at school. They feel a warmth of community wherever they go because of the atmosphere generated at JDS. It's been as great for us, as it is for our kids. They know all the teachers, and all the teachers know them. We have been very happy with JDS and the solid academic and people building foundation they are getting from their excellent experiences they are getting at JDS.
