Notes for Prospective Students
IPA seeks to admit students and families who desire a school
community based on core values such as kindness, generosity of
spirit and the importance of curiosity and creativity. The student
body reflects the cultural, ethnic and economic diversity of
Hawaii. Successful students at IPA are engaged learners and are
active participants in shaping their own learning experience. They
exhibit a mindset that recognizes diligence and hard work to be
essential ingredients for success, no matter the endeavor. They
enjoy the support of attentive parents who value education and
collaborate with teachers to provide an optimal learning
environment. While we admit some students at nearly every grade
level each year, the grades where most openings occur are in
Kindergarten (children turning 5 years old before start of school),
6th, 7th, and 9th grades. All candidates are considered based on
their application, Teacher Reference Reports, grades, standardized
test scores, and group or individual assessment. Kindergarten
applicants participate in group interviews or morning visits with
the class. During the interview, they are given an aptitude test to
assess kindergarten readiness. In addition to a full-day visit,
candidates in grades 1-5 are administered the Iowa State Test.
Applicants in grades 6-11 take the Secondary School Aptitude Test
(SSAT). During the class visit, they will participate in an
interview with an IPA faculty member. Applicants to grade 12 should
submit PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores with their applications. Their
interviews will be conducted by the secondary principal, who will
evaluate transcripts to ensure that graduation requirements can be
met.
