Unicorn School is a comprehensive, nonpublic, nonsectarian school providing special education services in a Special Day Class setting.
Unicorn School is operated by Unicorn Business Services, Inc. and is located in rural Mendocino County, in the small town of Philo.
The school serves the special education students in residence at Unicorn Youth Services, Inc., a level 10 residential treatment program.
These students are qualified for special education services due to learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, or for other health impairments such as ADD or ADHD. Students enter the program through an active IEP and are exited when they are able to be mainstreamed into the local school system.
The program offers a full day educational program designed to meet or exceed the state standards.
The educational and positive behavior programs are individually developed and implemented according to individual student needs.
Unicorn School offers a wide array of educational opportunities in addition to a frameworks-based curriculum.
Students are afforded an opportunity to participate in fine arts, crafts, music, wood shop, gardening, keyboarding, work experience and computer literacy.
The teaching staff includes three teachers, and four aides, along with several other auxiliary staff.
The teaching staff is credentialed and able to provide both general education and special education services to the students.
Instilling Goodness/Developing Virtue Schools are founded on the ideals set forth in the teachings of the Buddha.
Accordingly, courses in Buddhist Studies are requisite for all students.
Students of all faiths, however, are welcome. Our Buddhist schools, in partnership with parents, work to instill and develop in our students the core virtues of kindness, filial piety, respect, trustworthiness, fairness, citizenship, integrity and humility.
